SAP Business One can prepare Australian businesses for now and the future

Avatar Several developments in recent months have positioned SAP, an on-premise and cloud-based business software company, to have a profound impact in Australia. Among their products is the popular platform for SMB's, SAP Business One.

For one, SAP has invested $60 million dollars over five years into innovation centres in Victoria and Melbourne to advance business’ digital transformation. The Melbourne facility opened in August. The support centres are state-of-the-art, with the mission control centre one of only five in the world. This is to meet the needs of the increased number of businesses in Victoria interested in SAP’s digital transformation strategies. It also benefits SAP’s large network of local partners and ICT suppliers in Victoria. SAP increased revenue in Victoria 117% year over the past year.

The new facility is also an effort to develop and train Australians to work in the field. Employment in the sector in Victoria has increased 20% since March 2013 and SAP is expected to meet a goal of creating 120 jobs in ICT sector by this month.

Another development was SAP’s acquisition of Concur Technologies, a travel and expense software provider. Concur is the leading cloud-based travel and expense platform. Combining SAP and Concur’s cloud users will net SAP over 50,000,000 users, which by revenue, makes SAP the second largest cloud company in the world.

These developments, combined with what a global poll revealed about Australian businesses, create great opportunity. Undertaken by Oxford Economics, with support from SAP, the survey revealed that 60% of Australian businesses are not ready for the demands of the 2020 workforce. The survey polled over 5,500 employees in 27 countries and found, “while most companies recognise the importance of managing an international, diverse and mobile workforce, the majority lack the strategy, culture, and solutions to do so.” In Australia, 33% of executives said they use some forms of measurement in labour, but only 32% could figure out how to glean valuable information from those statistics. Worldwide, that figure is 42%. Other results of note:

  • 46% of employees feel they receive sufficient training in technology, but only 26% have the latest technology available to them
  • 85% of businesses are using contingent, intermittent, seasonal, or consultant employees; 49% said this increases the need for training.
  • 43 per cent of employees say their company provides the “right tools to help them improve and grow.”
  • The growing digital world is going to create a need for better analytical skills. 39% of employees feel they will be “proficient” in three years; 15% say they are proficient, now.

"This shows a significant gap between business preparation and business requirements when it comes to skills, benefits and training to meet the needs of both the organisation and the employees over the next six years," said Andrew Barkla, President and Managing Director, SAP Australia and New Zealand. "The Australian market in particular appears to be disconnected when it comes to management concerns and leadership, as well as training and education to bring businesses even further into the digital world," he added.
